Speaker: Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez
Topic: "The First 100 Days in Office and Plans for the 1st District"
Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez currently serves as the First District member of the Long Beach, CA City Council after her election in June 2014. This district includes much of downtown and the central part of the city, with a portion of the Westside. She is also very involved politically and in 2012 was elected as a State Delegate for California's 70th Assembly District while also serving as President for the Long Beach Democrats.
Previous to her election, Councilwoman Gonzalez attended California State University, Long Beach, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. It was in through that experience that she came in contact with (then) Councilmember Robert Garcia, who brought her into his office as the First District Field Deputy. In that role she oversaw community improvement projects and facilitated contact between the First District and its constituents. She worked with local neighborhood associations, different types of businesses, and city staff to improve the living and working conditions of the First District.
