STATEMENT

Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Expresses Disappointment with City Council's Stance on Proposition 36, Acknowledges Support from Three Councilmembers

The Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce expresses its disappointment with the Long Beach City Council's decision on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to not support Proposition 36, which includes critical reforms addressing retail theft, fentanyl, and mental health.

This vote contradicts the recommendations put forth by the city staff report and the Council's own Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, both of which had urged formal support for the proposition.

We extend our gratitude to the three councilmembers who voted in favor of Proposition 36 and its reforms: Vice Mayor and Second District Councilwoman Cindy Allen, Third District Councilwoman Kristina Duggan, and Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw.

For more than 133 years we have been advocating on behalf of Long Beach area businesses to create real solutions to their needs to make them successful and viable business partners in their communities.
