Sounds & Spaces: ?Made in America? Concert
The beautiful inner courtyard of Long Beach?s historic Rancho Los Cerritos adobe is the setting for our Sounds & Spaces season finale. Join the Long Beach Symphony Principal Winds, Heather Clark flute, Rong-Huey Lui oboe, Gary Bovyer clainet, Julie Feves bassoon and Joe Meyer French horn for a program of music for woodwind quintet. Few places speak to the American experience like Rancho los Cerritos and it becomes the perfect setting for a program of music by a diverse cast of American composers. Samuel Barber, the dean of American composition leads the way with his evocative ?Summer Music.? Composer Jennifer Higdon, on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music demonstrates why she was the recipient of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Music with her compelling piece ?Autumn Music.? Jeff Scott, an African American composer and the French Hornist of the Grammy nominated chamber group Imani Winds, brings a stunning hybrid of jazz and contemporary classical compositional styles together in his ?Homage to Duke.? While Mexican born, American raised composer Arturo Marquez, who studied at CalArts and is now on the faculty of the National University of Mexico, Superior School of Music charms us and wins us over with his work, Danza al Mediodía.
