Councilmember Al Austin II was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 2012 and re-elected to a second term in 2016 to represent Council District 8, which includes neighborhoods in Bixby Knolls and North Long Beach.
Austin has led a revitalization of the commercial corridors in the district, with new economic development in Bixby Knolls, Virginia Village and North Village. He's worked to build new housing opportunities and invest unprecedented funding for infrastructure improvements. Austin also championed adding more than 40 acres of new parks and open space in the Eighth District.
Councilmember Austin has initiated several programs, including an annual event to provide more than 1,500 free backpacks and school supplies to local kids, and an innovative community program to provide free exercise and activities for hundreds of seniors at the Expo Arts Center for the past three years.
