Exploration Talk about the History of the Japanese Fishing Village of Terminal Island
Join us for a powerful and enlightening talk by the Terminal Islanders Association that uncovers the often-overlooked history of the Japanese American community on Terminal Island in East San Pedro. This event explains the vital contributions of Japanese fishermen to the Southern California fishing industry during the early 20th century. Learn about the once-thriving Japanese Fishing Village, its erasure during WWII through the forced removal and incarceration of its residents, and the destruction of the entire community, except for two historic buildings known as the Tuna Street Buildings. The program includes sharing and advocating the ongoing fight to preserve the last remaining structures of this important cultural site.
This talk will feature three guest speakers and a special performance by taiko drummers, Ryujin Taiko. This event offers the opportunity to reflect on a profound chapter in our local and national history.
