Dress for Success Pop-up Shop” incorporates sexual health education and HIV/STD testing into the trendy popup retail concept that’s been most often used for restaurants, clothing designers, and other vendors. The chairs created the event four years ago when they were leading the Homeless Subcommittee. The chairs thought the popup shop concept would pair nicely with their existing structural change work by hosting this event annually in a different part of LA County. The goal was to reach unassuming youth who might not otherwise access these services because of the stigma and shame associated with doing so at a traditional venue such as an agency’s clothing closest or a workforce development center. On Saturday May 6th 2017, the event (see attached flyer) will be held in LA County’s 4th District at the Community Development YMCA on Long Beach Blvd. Youth ages (16-24) will experience a truly fun filled day where they will receive free professional clothing, free resume assistance, access to legal services, and free HIV/STD testing. Free food/drink will be provided and a live DJ will be spinning the hits as well as a to be confirmed appearance by a local radio station. Each attendee will also have access to a professional stylist, tailor, and career counselor.
